Pike County
Pike County was formed in 1833 from parts of Clark and Hempstead counties and named for explorer Zebulon Pike. Murfreesboro became its county seat, although courthouse fires later destroyed much of the early documentary record. The area gained another identity through its diamond-bearing ground, now interpreted and opened to visitors at Crater of Diamonds State Park. County history and geological history meet here, while Lake Greeson and the Little Missouri River add a separate outdoor dimension.
At Crater of Diamonds, the search itself is part of the experience: visitors work the field and learn about the minerals they find. A discovery is possible, but never guaranteed. Daisy State Park provides a lake-based alternative with camping and other recreation around Lake Greeson.
